Nestled in Dam Thuy commune, Trung Khanh district, Cao Bang province, Ban Gioc waterfall is impressive for its natural beauty and incredible power. An unsuspected treasure of nature! During your trip to Vietnam, do not forget to visit this waterfall, the most majestic and impressive of Vietnam.
Fed by the Quay Son River, the Ban Gioc waterfall forms a natural border between Vietnam and China. The small waterfalls on the left side and half of the right side of the large waterfalls belong to Vietnam. The other half of the right side of Ban Gioc is Chinese. It is the fourth largest waterfall in the world located on a national border.
Ban Gioc is the name of a nearby village, linked to the legend of the thwarted love of a young couple of the Tay ethnic group. Once upon a time, a prince fell in love with the most beautiful Tay lady of a village called Ban Gioc, who loved a Tay man from a neighboring village. The prince decided to lock up the lady in his palace. The Tay man braved all the dangers and managed to free her, then they fled under heavy rains. When the rains stopped, a waterfall with white foam appeared at the place where the two lovers had spent the night. Impressed by this love story, the local people named the waterfall after the village where the couple had last been seen.
This natural wonder is more than 30 meters high and crosses many layers of limestone from where they fall in cascade on three levels. At the highest level are the springs, at the second level the water has carved out small pools, the largest part of the waterfall falls at the last level to finally join the Quay Son River. These three groups are separated by rocks and trees. It is in the middle of the two big groups that the border is located. The small falls on the left appear only during and just after the rainy season.
The waterfall is surrounded by karst peaks, forests, rice fields and bamboo groves. You will also find water wheels that feed the canals of the fields. A unique natural picture in the world!
Each season, the Ban Gioc waterfall presents its own beauty. So you can go there all year round. However, the best time to visit Ban Gioc is from August to October, when the water becomes turquoise. It is also the harvest season which offers a fantastic view of the ripe rice fields. It is possible to take a short raft ride on the Quay Son River to admire the spectacular scenery.
Thanks to the breathtaking scenery and a cool climate all year round, Ban Gioc attracts both Vietnamese and foreign tourists.
