Vietnam has a rich and diverse treasure of folk culture, especially its proverbs and idioms. These are short pictorial phrases that summarize popular experiences in all areas of life such as nature, work, man and society.
Vietnamese proverbs tend to select intellectual and profound knowledge, so they are often called “folk wisdom”. This wisdom is very rich but also very diverse, but it is expressed in a short and concise language, easy to remember and understand, rich in images and rhythms.
Here are some of the most common and profound proverbs and idioms of the Vietnamese:
Ác giả, ác báo, literal translation : Evil calls for evil
Ăn quả nhớ kẻ trồng cây : Think of the one who planted the tree whose fruit you eat.
Bé trộm gà, già trộm bò : Young he steals a chicken, old he will steal an ox.
Bắt cá hai tay : Catch 2 fish with 2 hands (Love two people at the same time)
Bụt chùa nhà không thiêng : No man is a prophet in his own country
Chạy ba chân bốn cẳng : Take its legs to its neck
Chuyện bé xé ra to: To make an elephant out of a fly
Chó cắn áo rách: The dog barks at torn clothes (The dog always attacks the one with torn pants).
Cá lớn nuốt cá bé: The big fish eats the little fish.
Cha nào con nấy: Like father, like son.
Cái miệng hại cái thân: The mouth harms the body.
Còn nước còn tát: As long as there is life, there is hope.
Còn người còn của: Find your survival, money is looking for you.
Con nhà lính tính nhà quan : child of a soldier but the character (personality) as child of a mandarin.
Có chí thì nên : to a valiant heart, nothing is impossible
Chó chê mèo lắm lông: The dog criticizes the cat for its many hairs.
Cơm không lành canh không ngọt: The rice is not fragrant, the soup is not good (Referring to the discord between a wife and her husband).
Cờ bạc đãi tay mới: To the innocent with full hands
Chậm mà chắc: Slowly but surely
Chữ tín còn quý hơn vàng: Prestige is more precious than gold.
Có công mài sắt có ngày nên kim: Work spent sharpening iron eventually yields a needle (It is by forging that one becomes a blacksmith or With time and patience, one comes to terms with everything).
Có mới nới cũ: To abandon the old and seek the new.
Có nuôi con mới biết lòng cha mẹ: If you have children, you can know your parents’ hearts.
Cười người hôm trước, hôm sau người cười: Yesterday you laughed at him, tomorrow he will laugh at you
Đi đêm lắm có ngày gặp ma: By going out at night, you end up meeting the ghosts
Dục tốc bất đạt: Haste makes for failure.
Đen bạc đỏ tình: Unhappy at play, happy in love.

Được khen ho hen không còn : Trying to win praise, one loses one’s breath.
Được voi đòi tiên: The elephant obtained, one claims a fairy.
Đi một ngày đàng học một sàng khôn: A day’s walk, a basket of wisdom.
Ếch ngồi đáy giếng coi trời bằng vung: The frog at the bottom of a well considers the sky big as a lid
Gần mực thì đen, gần đèn thì sáng: Near the ink it blackens, near the lamp it lights.
Gậy ông đập lưng ông: To hurt oneself with one’s sword.
Ghét của nào trời trao của ấy: God gives him what he hates.
Giàu đâu những kẻ ngủ trưa, sang đâu những kẻ say sưa tối ngày: Wealth does not come to those who rise late nor honors to those who get drunk from morning to night.
Gieo gió gặp bão: He who sows the wind reaps the storm.
Hổ không ăn thịt con: The tiger does not devour its cubs (Wolves do not eat each other).
Không nên đánh giá con người qua vẻ bề ngoài: One should not judge people by their appearance
Không cho hết trứng vào một giỏ: One should not put all one’s eggs in one basket.

Mẹ nuôi được mười con, mười con không nuôi được một mẹ: A mother can feed ten children, but ten children do not feed a mother.
Một ngày trong tù bằng nghìn thu ở ngoài: One day in the prison is like a thousand autumns outside.
Mật ngọt chết ruồi: Sweet honey kills flies ( a trap with honey).
Mất bò mới lo làm chuồng : After losing of a cow, one rushes to make a stable.
Một cánh én không làm nên mùa xuân: One swallow does not make a spring
Mưu sự tại nhân, thành sự tại thiên: Man proposes, and God disposes.
Mỗi người một ý: So many heads, so many opinions.
Một con ngựa đau, cả tàu bỏ cỏ: One sick horse, the whole stable refuses grass.
No mất ngon, giận mất khôn: Stale makes one lose appetite, anger makes one lose wisdom.
Nói lời phải giữ lấy lời: A promise is a promise is a promise.
Nhàn cư vi bất thiện: Idleness is the mother of all vices
Ném đá dấu tay: Throwing a stone and hiding the hand.
Nhân nào quả nấy: The same causes produce the same effects
Nồi nào vung nấy: To each pot its own lid
Nước chảy về cội: The water always goes to the river

Ngưu tầm ngưu, mã tầm mã: Tell me who you are haunting, I will tell you who you are.
Nhân vô thập toàn: To err is human ( man is not perfect).
Phòng bệnh hơn chữa bệnh: Prevention is better than cure.
Quýt làm cam chịu: The tangerine made the mistake, and it is the orange that must pay.

Thà chết vinh còn hơn sống nhục: More dying than living in slavery.
Tránh voi chẳng xấu mặt nào: In avoiding elephants, there is no shame.
Trâu bò húc nhau, ruồi muỗi chết: When buffaloes and oxen clash, flies and mosquitoes die.
Tai vách mạch dừng: The walls have ears, the partitions have holes.
Trăm nghe không bằng một thấy: A hundred things heard are not worth one thing seen.
