Ba Be Lake

The special lake

The lake is made of three small lakes, Pé Lầm, Pé Lù and Pé Lèng.

Its local name is Slam Pé (three lakes), it is commonly called Hồ Ba Bê ( Ba Be lake ).

It is the largest natural freshwater lake in Vietnam. Ba Be Lake is over 8 km long, about 3 km wide at its widest point and about 20-30 m deep. It is located at 145 m above sea level and covers an area of about 650 hectares and is surrounded by steep limestone mountains with many underground streams and caves, some of which are still unexplored.

It is fed by three main streams – Cho Lung River at Pac Ngoi village, Nam Cuong stream at Bo Lu village and Ta Nang River at the west of the lake.

The lake bed is made up of limestone and a very thick layer of clay that holds water, cliffs and crevices ideal for a wide variety of aquatic life – there are over a hundred species of freshwater fish in this lake.

Ba Be Lake is located in the middle of the Ba Be Park

It is Vietnam’s eighth national park, recognized in 2011 by UNESCO as Vietnam’s third Ramsar site – (The Ramsar Convention, is an international treaty that advocates the conservation and wise use of wetlands).

Its waters, riverbanks and evergreen forests, and steep slopes are home to a number of globally threatened species such as the Asian marbled cat, the Francois’ langur, the big-headed turtle, and endemic species such as the Vietnamese salamander.

The site is recognized as an important bird area, with more than 1% of the threshold population of the white-eared night heron.

Ba Be Lake regulates water supply, providing water for irrigation during the dry season and mitigating flooding of four rivers during the rainy season.

It is fragile, threatened by infrastructure development, bird hunting, fuel and solid waste pollution, and forest clearing for agriculture.
