Located 160 km north of Hanoi in Yen Bai province, dotted with hundreds of islands shaped like inverted bowls and covered with thick vegetation, Thac Ba Lake is considered the “Halong Bay of the mountains”. In the past, the lake was fed by the waterfalls of Thac Ba (Cascade Madame) and Thac Ong (Cascade Monsieur). These two waterfalls were swallowed up by the lake when the hydroelectric plant was formed. In commemoration of these waterfalls, the lake is named Thac Ba. The name Thac Ong was given to a nearby bridge that crosses the Chay River in the area.
Thac Ba Lake was formed after the construction of the dam on the Chay River. It is among the three largest artificial lakes in Vietnam, covering a total area of 23,400 ha, of which 19.05 ha is water surface and the remaining 4.35 ha islets. The length of the lake is 80 km, the maximum width is 10 km. The average depth is 15 to 25 m, even 42 m, with 2.9 billion m3 of water. This lake has more than 1300 islands and many sublime caves.
In addition to the landscape, Thac Ba Lake also contributes significantly to the protection and improvement of the environment. It is home to a rich ecosystem of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish. In May 1996, Thac Ba Lake was recognized as a National Cultural Heritage.

Take a cruise and swim on the lake

The water of the lake is imprinted with the reflections of the surrounding ancient forest, creating a clear blue background. Immerse yourself in the culture of ethnic groups
Thac Ba is home to ethnic minorities such as the Tay, Nung, Thai, Muong and especially the white pants Daos. During a walk in Thac Ba, you can meet the locals, immerse yourself in their culture and discover their way of life.
The white-pants Dao live in stilt houses along the shores of the lake and live from fishing, agriculture and fish farming. Both men and women mainly wear white pants for ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. Women usually wear an indigo hemp tunic and short indigo pants, beautiful earrings and intricately carved silver bracelets and necklaces. The men wear pants, a jacket and a shirt. To this day, older women still chew betel to protect their teeth.
