Once upon a time, there was a lumberjack who earned his living by cutting wood. Even though he was old enough to get married, no girl in the village was willing to marry him because he was so poor.
One day, while he was cutting wood in the forest, a small deer appeared to him, pursued by a hunter he immediately sought refuge with the woodcutter, the young man hid it under his pile of wood.
Moved by the kindness of the woodcutter, the deer confided a secret to him. He told him that every night, fairies come down to the shore of the pond to bathe after playing chess on the flat rocks. He advised the young man to hide near the pond to catch a glimpse of the beautiful creatures.
The next night, the woodcutter hides and indeed, at nightfall, the fairies appear laughing and innocent, as announced, after their chess game, they bathe in the pond. The woodcutter, especially fascinated by the beauty of the youngest fairy, falls deeply in love with her. To be able to talk to her without her running away, he hid his clothes in a bush.
The fairies returned to the shore, put on their clothes and flew up to the sky, only the youngest was delayed, she was looking for her clothes. Then the woodcutter offered her his jacket to cover her and took her home.
The young fairy found this man so gentle that she instantly trusted him. Amazed by his simple way of life she didn’t want to leave, the woodcutter asked her to stay with him forever and become his wife, which she accepted!
The fairy gave the woodcutter a beautiful boy. After the birth of their second child, his wife’s health began to deteriorate and the little fairy became sicker every day.
One afternoon, he decided to take his family to the pond, he was surprised when he saw little lights flickering through a bush, it was the dress he had hidden many years ago!
The fairy explained to the woodcutter that she was dying.
In her kingdom with her brothers and sisters, she is immortal, the only way to save her is to leave the earth and return to the sky. Now that her dress was found, she could do that, but it also meant that she would never be allowed to return.
The couple thought about it for a week and one morning the woodcutter knew what to do.
He loved his family too much to see them suffer, his wife had to leave and take their half-fairy half-human children with her to save them.
The family returned to the pond, after a last kiss, the fairy disappeared with her children. The woodcutter returned to the pond every day to make sure the water was clean and the bushes green.
The pond is still a source of inspiration for many lovers today.
