Van Phuc silk, the most famous fabric in Vietnam

When we talk about Vietnamese silk, we immediately think of the village of Van Phuc. Located about ten kilometers from the center of Hanoi city, Van Phuc attracts many visitors thanks to the good quality of its natural silk.

Renowned for its fineness and softness, Van Phuc silk, also called Hà Dông silk, is the most famous fabric in Vietnam.

Van Phuc is the most famous silk village in Vietnam and one of the best developed and most visited handicraft villages in Hanoi. It should be noted that the capital currently has a total of more than 90 handicraft villages.

With a history of more than 1,200 years, Van Phuc silk was decorated in 2018 with the “National Brand” label.

Unlike the industrial production of large quantities, on automated machines of the many factories in Central Vietnam, Van Phuc silk is made in an artisanal way. Currently, there are about 170 silk manufacturers in Van Phuc with nearly 300 weaving looms. Its production is limited compared to the great needs of domestic and foreign consumers.

In Van Phuc, everywhere you can hear the sound of weaving looms. According to a craftsman from Van Phuc village, only 1,500 km of silk are produced to supply the loyal customers and foreign tourists. The international visitors of the village come mainly from Asia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand… They appreciate the quality of Van Phuc silk and thus the talent of its craftsmen and producers.

Van Phuc silk is beautiful, fine, durable and light. This is the reason why these silks are coveted by so many visitors from all over the world.

If in the past, Van Phuc silk was reserved only for royal families, mandarins or the rich. Nowadays, this product is for everyone.

Once there, visitors can choose silk items while trying to understand the weaving process. It is a hard work that is passed on from generation to generation.

In recent years, Hanoi City has enacted policies to develop Van Phuc Village into an attractive tourist destination. In addition, the local authorities provide financial support to excellent craftsmen to train young generations.

In fact, along with Duong Lam and Bat Trang, Van Phuc is one of the three most visited ancient villages in Hanoi, especially for foreign tourists.

It is worth noting that Vietnam is ranked 6th in the world among silk producing countries behind China, India, Uzbekistan, Thailand and Brazil.
